การบริการ (Service) คือ การให้ความช่วยเหลือ หรือการดำเนินการเพื่อประโยชน์ของผู้อื่นการบริการที่ดี ผู้รับบริการก็จะได้รับความประทับใจ และชื่นชมองค์กร ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งดีสิ่งหนึ่งอันเป็นผลดีกับองค์กรของเรา เบื้องหลังความสำเร็จเกือบทุกงาน มักพบว่างานบริการเป็นเครื่องมือสนับสนุนงานด้านต่าง ๆ เช่น งานประชาสัมพันธ์ งานบริการวิชาการ เป็นต้น ดังนั้น ถ้าบริการดี ผู้รับบริการเกิดความประทับใจ ซึ่งการบริการถือเป็นหน้าเป็นตาขององค์กร ภาพลักษณ์ขององค์กรก็จะดีไปด้วย
คำว่า “Service” แยกอักษรออกเป็นความหมายดังนี้
S = Smile (อ่านว่า สมาย) แปลว่า ยิ้มแย้ม
E = enthusiasm (อ่านว่า เอนทูซิแอสซึม) แปลว่า ความกระตือรือร้น
R = rapidness (อ่านว่า เรปปิดเนส) แปลว่า ความรวดเร็ว ครบถ้วน มีคุณภาพ
V = value (อ่านว่า วาลลู) แปลว่า มีคุณค่า
I = impression (อ่านว่า อิมเพรสชัน) แปลว่า ความประทับใจ
C = courtesy (อ่านว่า เคอติซี) แปลว่า มีความสุภาพอ่อนโยน
E = endurance (อ่านว่า เอนดูเรน) แปลว่า ความอดทน เก็บอารมณ์
การบริการที่ดีต้องเกิดขึ้นจากใจ เพราะการบริการเป็นการอำนวยความสะดวกให้กับผู้ใช้เพื่อให้เกิดความรวดเร็ว สบายใจและพอใจ คนส่วนใหญ่คิดว่า งานบริการเป็นเรื่องของบริการ เป็นเรื่องของการรับใช้ แท้ที่จริงไม่ใช่งานบริการคืองานใด ๆ ก็ได้ที่เกิดจากมีผู้ให้และมีผู้รับอย่างมีเงื่อนไขกล่าวคือ เป็นบริการที่ดีแล้วผู้รับต้องพึงพอใจต้องให้บริการ
